You are a leader.

The question is: How are you leading yourself?

Most people think leadership is about leading others. It's not. Leadership begins with how we lead ourselves.

And the hardest person you will ever lead?

You. Every time.

Leading yourself comes with no title, no authority, and no audience. It happens in the quiet moments when no one is watching.

It's reflected in the choices you make, the habits you cultivate, the standards you uphold, and the responsibility you take for your life.

The truth is that many of us know what we should do. We know the conversations we need to have, the habits we need to change, and the goals we need to pursue.

Yet knowing and doing are often separated by a gap called self-leadership.

It's easy to overlook the ‘self’ and focus on what everyone else should think, say, or do. It's much harder to examine how we contribute to the situations we find ourselves in.

This week, I had a conversation with a client who was struggling in a close personal relationship. For much of our discussion, they explained everything the other person needed to change.

After listening for a while, I asked a simple question,

"What part of this situation are you responsible for?"

There was a long silence. A hard silence.

Eventually, they acknowledged they had been avoiding an honest conversation because it felt uncomfortable. In that moment, the issue was no longer about the relationship. It was about self-leadership.

Ownership precedes leadership.
