The Gap Between Knowing and Doing

Jul 31, 2026

You already know more than enough.

The question is: What are you doing with what you know?

You know you should spend more time with your family. Put your phone down. Have the difficult conversation. Stop procrastinating. Save more. Be kinder. Look after your health.

The problem isn't a lack of knowledge. It's the gap between knowing and doing.

This week, I had a conversation with a coaching client who wanted to improve his relationship with his teenage daughter. He spoke passionately about the importance of being present, listening well, and making family a priority. As we talked, he glanced down and checked his phone.

I smiled and asked, "How often do you put your phone away when your daughter is talking to you?"

He smiled. Then looked at the floor. "I know," he said quietly.

"I know too," I replied.

"Far be it for me to be self-righteous - we all slip."

He didn't need another book, podcast, or psychological framework.

He already knew what mattered. What he needed was the discipline to consistently act on what he already believed was important.

That's the challenge for all of us.

We often search for new answers when the real issue is applying the ones we already have.

Knowledge informs. Action transforms.

Self-leadership is found in the space between intention and behaviour. It is choosing what matters over what is comfortable. It is closing the gap between what we say we value and how we actually live.

Every decision either strengthens or weakens the person you are becoming.

That's where real change begins.

So, as you move through the week, ask yourself one simple question:

Where is the biggest gap between what I know and what I do?

Because the most important project you will ever work on is you.

Lead yourself forward.
